Tradition and the essence of Culture
Nine a clock sharp we were sitting in front of the gracious Buddha in the Aranyawat temple situated on the curvy road to the mountain town Samoeng. In this enchanting setting surrounded by mountains and tropical green lush the monk appeared in his wine red sarong in an upright position and a sense of purity that almost could be felt through the air as he sat down.

I was starring with some awe at him, and in my mind I was really wondering how he felt about blessing a website through khun Jans notebook? I wonder if Apple ever had any of their notebooks blessed by a monk before?

The monk just smiled softly giving up a short giggle, and then explained to us that blessing our project was similar to that of a book. Since today was a great day for starting projects relating to culture, he also briefed us that trying to explain Lanna culture can be hard in English. It is not easy to reach the essence of why people think the way they think and why they act in a certain way.

He continued by saying that this however is an important mission since the inhabitants of Northern Thailand themselves sometimes forget the origin of their culture and why the certain festivals are celebrated. He also mentioned that the Shan people (tai yai) had a more natural way of relating to ancient thai ways, for example Buddhism. From what we understood, his main point was however that we take on this project with the deepest love of our hearts and with a correct motivation.

I think we were also blessed by the presence of a small dog that ran in during the ceremony. A homeless and very friendly dog, well taken care of by the monks.

We will definitely give it our best try, and hope that in the long run we can give something back to this region. Our donation to the temple was the perfect Asian number 999 baht, and donated at 9 a clock together with auspicious flowers and fruits such as; marigold, jasmine and bananas.

The monk, Than Nuttachai Apichawanunto, has done a great job to build this temple up, and the money will surely be well used. At a ceremony in Wat Phra Singh he will receive gratitude for his work on the 9th of November.

In the temple they hold English classes and teach how to use computers. At the moment funds are lacking however and they have only one computer therefore if you happen to pass by this temple, and if you have a computer that you don’t longer need or use it will be greatly appreciated as a donation.
